In a sad event MNS MLA Slapped Abu Azmi for taking oath in Hindi
MUMBAI: Defying Raj Thackeray's MNS diktat asking all newly-elected MLAs to takeoath in Marathi, Samajwadi Party's Maharashtra chief Abu Azmi took his oath in Hindi. He was the centre of MNS MLA's wrath, as they protested loudly and even threw an object at him.
As Azmi started to take his oath in Hindi, several MNS members swooped on him and pushed him aside. Legislator Ramesh Banjle uprooted the microphone from the podium.
MNS members shouted slogans, demanding that Azmi should take oath in Marathi.
As Azmi attempted to save himself, MNS member Ram Kadam slapped him and hit him on the face and chest, shocking the 288-member house that had converged for the oath-taking ceremony.
The House was adjourned for 30 minutes.
Samajwadi Party's general secretary Amar Singh, in Abu Azmi's defense, said that Union Minister MK Azhagiri had chosen Tamil for his parliamentary duties. Despite the MNS's antics, the constitution does not lay down any rule that oaths cannot be taken in regional languages.
Chief Minister Ashok Chavan and Energy Minister Ajit Pawar tried to restore calm in the House.
MNS Chief Raj Thackeray had last month announced that his party legislators would ensure that all MLAs took oath in Marathi.
